High performing teams, groups and organisations achieve greatness based on their people’s quality of skills, ability to problem solve, grit, resilience, authenticity, and capacity to learn. Effective processes and systems also play an essential role, HOWEVER, they cannot be the primary focus.

Many individuals blame the system or processes for things falling over, poor performance, or not achieving expected results. It can be easier to believe we need to fix a system or others rather than look INWARDS to grow and develop ourselves. This may involve an honest appraisal of what is actually happening and could require us to admit our own mistakes, faults, or roles within the situation. This is not about blame. It is about finding a way forward in the pursuit of greatness.

This takes courage but generates great rewards.

Some of the most challenging times in our careers can be operating within systems and processes that we disagree with, or working with managers or colleagues whom we find taxing. Many people are familiar with this concept to some degree. It’s not much fun. To hold other people responsible for the circumstance we find ourselves in, is disempowering. If we align with a system, process or person dictating what and how to operate, then we have just given away our power. We need to align with our own values, beliefs and strengths to create our authentic way forward.

Think of the personal cost of continuously blaming systems, processes, the manager, or other people. In these moments of blaming, shaming and criticising 'them', we are squandering time, energy, productivity and potentially our own reputation. Our creative problem-solving abilities are being suppressed. This will lead to the negative belief that the system or process happens to us, not for us.

We need to begin with authenticity.

The only thing we have control over is ourselves. OUR thoughts, OUR feelings and OUR actions.

Cultivate life to happen FOR you not TO you!

We have seen throughout history the people who made remarkable discoveries and breakthroughs were the ones who stepped outside the usual routines of conformity, and expressed their authenticity to make things happen.

In the words of Marie Curie - "You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end each of us must work for her/his own improvement, and at the same time share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful."

Regardless of the system we are working in, we need to change something that we CAN control. The remarkable game changers cultivate life to happen FOR them, not to them.

How to increase life happening FOR you:

  1. Notice the times you engage in blaming and criticising – catch yourself in the moment and switch to a positive approach.
  2. Engage in actions to move forward – limit the focus on the past events. Identify what can be done now to move forward. When we stay stuck in negative past events it drags us down.
  3. Cultivate a united effort – let others know that you are developing and growing yourself. A group of resilient, self-aware, authentic people in pursuit of greatness is awe-inspiring.


Purposefully choosing our thoughts, feelings and actions enables us as individuals to learn, grow, and adapt to the situations we find ourselves in. This progress is not system dependent.

Remember its about YOU, not the external system that you are working in. When we are aware of our strengths, select our thoughts carefully and create opportunities FOR us, then we are able to FLOURISH in all areas of our lives.
